I would love to have any advice from anyone about whelping and birthing puppies. We have a female coming into the rescue tomorrow, that is pregnant.
Any and all advice or experiences are greatly appreciated.
Thanks |

Good luck! I hope everything went ok. I know nothing about whelping puppies. I don't typically deal with any dogs under 8 weeks old. |

I recommend getting some books on the subject and maybe consulting a vet. When I was a child our doberman gave birth to 2 litters, and while I've been volunteering at Stray Rescue of St Louis I've helped with some new litters. So I only know the basics:
Pregnant dogs need good nutrition, quiet/calm environment.
Birthing area needs to be fairly confined so puppies can't wander off and momma feels more comfortable leaving them alone for short time while she goes potty.
Some momma dogs are fiercely protective of the pups, and others don't mind a little human assistance.
The shelter puts thin newspaper strips on top of the flat newspaper so that it's more cushiony for the momma & pups. At home we used towels but that means alot of laundry.
Keep pups clean and away from adult dog fecal matter to reduce chances of parvo. |
